A backyard pool can be such an exciting amenity to have everyday access to. Not only is it a place where you can enjoy swimming or relaxing, but a gorgeous pool also becomes a beautiful aesthetic addition to the property. You can enjoy sitting nearby to read or dine—or even enjoy the view of it from inside of your home.

That is unless you have an existing pool that you really don’t like.

Actually, having a pool that you dislike can be the opposite of all those things. It can become an eyesore and a sense of frustration every time that you look at it. And if it isn’t set up the way you wish it was, you might not even enjoy using it.

Whether you’re unhappy with the size, the shape, the depth, or maybe just the overall look of the pool, you might be interested in a swimming pool remodel. And whether you inherited this pool upon buying a home or maybe you had it installed many years ago, and it’s become dated, you likely have questions about how much is possible with renovating a pool.

Can you make an existing pool bigger?

Can you change the shape?

We’re here to answer all of your questions so that you can get your backyard the way you truly want it and be able to enjoy it to the fullest.

Can You Make an Existing Pool Bigger?

One of the biggest frustrations with an existing pool is when it’s too small. If it feels small and cramped any time that you’re swimming with more than just your immediate family (or maybe even with your family), then the experience is not going to be enjoyable.

When it comes to changing the size of a swimming pool, it is usually more cost-effective to start over than to try to add-on to what’s already there. Doing the latter also puts you at risk of creating something that looks pieced together (similar to when an addition is added onto a home at a later date but doesn’t look like it was always meant to be that way).

So, we’d rip out the existing pool and just start over with a pool that is exactly the size that you want it.

Honestly, the same is true of attempting to reshape an existing pool or to change the depth. It will be a lot more cost-effective to just start over than trying to work with what’s already there.

This will mean getting the custom pool that you desire. Instead of trying to mold an existing pool that someone else liked into something that suits you, we can help you to just start over and create the exact pool of YOUR dreams.

This also means incorporating features that the previous pool owner may not have thought of like a walk-in or beach entry, an infinity edge, built-in rock wall formations, or various types of water features.

You can also get completely creative and custom, creating something truly your own, such as this homeowner who wanted a countryside pool.

Too often we see these very cookie-cutter pools that really don’t fit the property at which they’re built. They were installed that way potentially because that’s all the pool builder knew how to do. But you want something more—something better—and something that is truly your own.

A Swimming Pool Remodel Without Changing the Size of Shape of the Pool

Of course, we can also perform a swimming pool remodel without changing the size and shape of the pool. This would mean working with what’s already there. A lot of times if the pool isn’t really small (and that’s the main source of your problems with it), you don’t necessarily need to start from complete scratch.

Instead, you can have a backyard makeover performed that includes things like brand new tile, coping, and finish of the pool—as well as a brand-new outdoor living area around it.

Homeowners are often surprised just how much renovating a pool in this way can make a difference. In fact, the pool will not even be recognizable to what it was before. Even without changing the size, depth, or shape, you can have a pool that is more your own and brand-new in many ways.

Use This Helpful Guide to Plan Your Pool Design

The fact is, if your pool is 20 years old, materials have come incredibly far since then. There are a lot more options nowadays.

And even if your pool isn’t that old, but it was designed and built by someone else, there are likely lots of choices that would be much more suited to your wants and needs. With brand-new tile, coping, and finish, you can have a totally renovated pool that gives you much more enjoyment.

Brand-New Outdoor Living Areas for a Pool Transformation

It’s also important to remember how critical the areas around the pool are when it comes to your enjoyment of the space. So often we see pools in which a tiny walkway around the pool and a really small attached patio are all that’s included in the design. If that’s the case for you, this likely has a tremendous amount to do with your dissatisfaction with the existing pool.

Fortunately, this is also something that we can update as part of a swimming pool remodel. And honestly, once you’ve upgraded the areas around your pool, you’ll find that you’re spending so much more time there. Homeowners often tell us that the areas around the pool are spaces where they spend more time than actually in the pool, so these are critically important.

Oftentimes, when we renovate an existing pool, we’re adding a full-blown patio area with all of the amenities that inspire people to spend more time outside.

Some of these include the following ideas:

Working with Rock Water Farm on Renovating a Pool

When it comes to using and enjoying your home and yard to the fullest, you want to make sure that you have features that inspire you to be outside making memories with your family. You don’t want something that is causing you frustration, stress, or maybe even keeping you from being outside.

A swimming pool that you dislike can cause all of those problems—but it doesn’t have to be that way.

At Rock Water Farm, we’ve certainly worked with clients who have had existing pools that they did not like. But we’ve been able to come in and complete total renovation that allows them to finally have the pool of their dreams.

Sometimes, that means starting from scratch if everything about the pool is a problem (like the size, shape, or depth). But oftentimes, we can work with what’s there in terms of the shell but redo everything else.

On top of that, we can add a whole new outdoor living area that suddenly has you spending all of your free time down at your personal oasis.

We believe that nothing about a pool should ever be an afterthought. And because of that, we are able to create some really amazing, custom designs, even when working with clients who have an existing pool that they hate.
